Periodic limb movement disorder (PLMD), previously known as nocturnal myoclonus, is a sleep disorder, where the patient moves his limbs involuntarily during sleep and has symptoms or problems related to the movement. PLMD should not be confused with restless legs syndrome (RLS).
PLMD is a contributing factor in chronic insomnia and/or daytime fatigue because they it might cause you to wake up during the night. The prevalence of PLMD is estimated to be 4-11% amongst adults.
